Jennifer "JJ" Stevens, a California native grew up in Fallbrook with her
parents Frank and Barbara Maxwell, and her younger brother Steven. Jennifer started losing her hearing at a very young age. Her hearing loss made it easy to sit and draw. She sees 'sounds'. Due to her hearing loss, she was closer to her horses than other kids. She was good at drawing as soon as she could hold a crayon. Horses, Unicorns and Pegasus were her favorite subjects. She often got in trouble for drawing unicorns instead of doing class work.
Jennifer got her first horse ride with her Grandpa Armin on a dark horse rented at a stable. She was given her first horse at 5 years old. A beautiful little Shetland pony, who bucked her off every time she tried to ride him. Jennifer got into the Thoroughbred after reading of Man O' War, the Black Stallion and Ruffian. She fell in love with the Arabian when she was given a copy of Arabian Horse World and saw Kemosabi as well as all the other beautiful Arabians. After her kids were born, she came into the world of the American Paint Horse. Her filly, Ferrarie, is a lovely nearly black and white Paint. The Paint Horse makes excellent subjects with their loud colors.
When she was 12, her Dad and Grandfather took her out on his sailboat. They had a close encounter with a Gray whale. After that, she was always trying to get to go to Sea World to see the whales and dolphins. Jennifer started painting whales and dolphins after seeing them in person.
She took art classes in Junior High and High School. Jennifer won many awards for her work in the Youth Fair at Fallbrook High School. In 1989, she created the Oceanhorse, a combination of her greatest loves, horses and whales/dolphins. She got 3rd place for her first sketch of the Oceanhorse. She graduated from Fallbrook High School and still did the occasional work. Now she has the Oceanhorse for her logo and a beautiful bronze sculpture of the Oceanhorse.
Today, Jennifer and her husband, Wayne live in Nuevo, California with their four kids.
Between the family, pets and her horses, she still finds time to create new works. Jennifer has expanded from just horses in her work. She paints dogs, whales, dolphins, seals, and is trying out flowers and landscapes.
In 2006, with encouragement from her family and friends, Jennifer started making prints and going to art fairs. She started showing her art in 2008. She is a member of the Temecula Valley Art League and Canyon Lake Art Association. Jennifer works with pencils, pen and ink, watercolor and her favorite, sculpture. She did her first dog painting of her husband's Pitbull, Seagram. Jennifer is working on a series of different dogs in art.
Some of Jennifer's art has gone as far as England, but most are in California with North Dakota, Washington, Idaho and Arizona on the list of places her work has been sent to. She hopes to have work in all 50 states in time. See Gallery
